Campaign Workshop in Santa Cruz, CA for Community Activists

Activists rally croppedCommunity and environmental activists will be immersed in proven advocacy methods for three packed days:

Friday June 30 – Sunday July 2 at UC Santa Cruz

Grab this opportunity to take part in one of One Street’s renowned Campaign Planning Workshops. It’s been a long time since we offered it in North America.

Our current work with environmental organizations in the western U.S. has led us to offer this workshop on the lovely campus of the University of California Santa Cruz.

Bicycle, community, and environmental activists can find more info and REGISTER HERE.

The workshop is based on the experience of participants, so come prepared to share your wisdom. Breakout sessions, working groups, and intensive activities will prompt cross-pollination as participants offer their expertise from their initiatives.

Participants will finish the training with a comprehensive and winnable campaign plan that will help grow their organization. These new skills will also apply to future campaigns.

Lodging will be in student rooms vacated for the summer break. Healthy, locally sourced meals will be served in the cafeteria. The workshop will start just before lunch on Friday and end at noon on Sunday.

Santa Cruz is a popular vacation spot with its picturesque beaches, surfing, and redwood-forested mountains surrounding the town. A fully connected bikeway system of on-street lanes as well as scenic bike paths has made Santa Cruz one of the top bicycle cities in the United States.

Consider making the workshop part of a fun trip to explore the natural beauty of this coastal area just south of San Francisco.

Please forward the workshop link to activists and other organizations who might benefit.

If you would like more information, please email Sue Knaup, One Street’s executive director, who will be leading the workshop: sue{at}onestreet.org

Bosnian Partners Running with Campaign Training

This year we are starting Phase III of our campaign planning partnership project with Center for Environment (CfE) in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). In late 2022, we received the good news of further funding from the Trust for Mutual Understanding for our campaign planning project together. This time, we did not have the capacity to raise additional funds to cover Sue Knaup’s travel costs to BiH in order to conduct the site visits and three-day workshop. But our partners at CfE have done such a terrific job during Phases I and II capturing the process, they stepped right up to lead the process themselves – fantastic! This is exactly what we hope for when we work on projects with partners around the world.

Sue Knaup is assisting them from her home base in Prescott, Arizona as they prepare for the training. Mentors from Phase II will assist with the site visits and workshop. They are now sorting through the dozens of applications from potential new trainees they have already received. Their three-day workshop is scheduled for June 23-25 at the beautiful Pecka Visitor Center where we’ve held it in the past.

In our next E-newsletter you can read about the organizations and campaigns they developed at the workshop. For now, you can enjoy some photos from our last site visits and workshop together in 2021.

DR Congo Partners Building New Website

Over the past several months, we’ve been working with our partners at Organisation Humanitaire pour l'Éducation et le Développement (OHED) to help them build a new website. Their old host and web designer was not taking care of their needs. So we offered to pay for the new design and ensure that they will take full control of the website once it is finished. We’re using Word Press as the framework and will train a few of their leaders in how to keep their new website updated. We hope to showcase their new website in our next newsletter.

Resources - Happiness Could Be the New Metric for Transportation Projects in the U.S.

As advocates for people-centered transportation planning, we work hard to shift expectations away from simply moving more cars faster. So we were pleasantly surprised to find this article in the journal of one of the more influential transportation organizations in the U.S. suggesting that happiness be added to the list of measurements for transportation project success.

Hot Topics – The Case for Guerrilla Crosswalks

As we look ahead to our two upcoming Campaign Planning Workshops, we are preparing to guide our trainees toward creating a comprehensive plan before considering tactics. A common mistake for activists is to jump directly into tactics that have no connection to the overall change needed. And yet, even we can’t help enjoying the fun of effective tactics. Guerrilla crosswalks are a great example. Enjoy this article about their rising popularity.
